A Burning Backyardigan Question

Some mysteries just drive us all insane. Lately my routine two days a week has included doses of The Backyardigans. Have you seen them? I've included a snapshot of the gang. My nephews love them and I must admit to having developed a fondness for the soft, high voices as they sing both the catchiest theme song in history and many pop-tune style numbers during the show. It's a little embarrassing to be caught singing away at Stop and Shop, but the occasional grin of sympathy from another adult clearly caught in Backyardigan world, too, is somehow gratifying.

But there is something of a... well, a mystery afoot. There are five Backyardigans. They are:

Tyrone (moose), Pablo (penguin), Uniqua (nobody knows what she is), Tasha (hippo), and Austin (kangaroo).

In each episode four Backyardigans appear. There are five. Very often the "missing" Backyardigan is Tasha, but sometimes Austin vanishes, too. I have searched the net and can't find a reason. I have thought... considered... and now this is starting to fester. Does Homeland Security know about this? Is it a conspiracy? If anyone out there knows, please tell me.

It's bad enough I sing the stupid songs when I'm foodshopping. I can't be losing sleep over this stuff!

Kathryn Smith & Jenna Black ROCK!

This month (due to never-ending health stuff) I took a break from Romance News as a reviewer and just helped out editorially and as a backup reader. What a great lot of fun it was! My new favorite discoveries include:

Kathryn Smith, a writer of historicals and author of a wonderful new vampire series. Maria Alvarez asked me to second-read her latest, Dark Huntress, the second in her Brotherhood of the Blood series.

Jenna Black, who is the author of the Watchers in the Night series. This series looks equally promising, and will expand in May with another release. Her website is great!

Check back on February 14th for more... we'll launch the NEW Romance News, announce a fantastic contest at Romance Divas with FREE online reads, and more favorite reads from the latest releases on romance shelves everywhere.

Thanks for the Ego Boost, Kid

Having recently spent 60 bucks on the complete Olay Regenerist line for the hopelessly baggy-eyed and aging, I was a bit disconcerted by my nephew this morning. I picked him up at pre-school as usual. We were gathering his things when he dropped the bomb. Tipping over so he could peek up under my baseball cap, he said "you don't look good. Have you had your coffee?"

He will be 4 in a month or so.

It's not so much that a 4 year old knows me well enough to tell I haven't had coffee yet and am not, technically, a member of the human race until after Starbucks. The other parents got a big kick out of the comment. I can laugh at myself. It's just that... well I spent 60 bucks on the goop! Surely for that amount even a kid could see some improvement?

Probably not. Plus, kids at this age repeat things and sound older and more savvy than they are, right? Right... that's it. He was repeating something. It has nothing to do with the massive bags under my eyes. I'll just go with that.

Out of the mouths of babes come harsh, harsh truths.
